Cigarette packaging survey 

Dear respondent,

Thank you for taking the time to answer this survey. 

Background: In many countries, including South Africa, cigarette manufacturers face strict advertising and marketing restrictions. One of the last avenues to promote cigarettes is through cigarette packages. We are interested in learning how, in addition to price, some features of cigarette packs and cigarettes may affect people’s choice of cigarettes. We are also interested in learning about perceptions of health risks.

About this survey: To participate in this survey, you need to be 18 years or older. The survey involves two main sections: a short opinion survey about cigarette packaging (for smokers and non-smokers) and a set of auctions (for smokers only). There are no right or wrong answers to any of these questions. You will then be asked some demographic information, such as your gender and age. These are for statistical purposes only and will not be used to identify you in any way. Your participation in this research is voluntary. You can choose to withdraw from the research at any time. The questionnaire will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.

Prize: By completing the survey, you will be entered into a random draw to win one of five R1000 Takealot vouchers. You will be asked for your student number so that we can contact you if you are one of the winners. Your student number will not be used for any other purpose.

Ethics: This research has been approved by the Commerce Faculty Ethics in Research Committee.

Use of cellphones and small tablets: This survey contains images that are formatted for optimal viewing on a computer screen. To complete this survey, you must use a computer or a device with a screen larger than 9".  Please do not complete the survey on a cellphone or small tablet because some images will not appear correctly on smaller screens and your responses will be invalidated.
